Common reasons for visit
 
  • Prescription refills.
  • Medical evaluations.
  • Back, arm, leg pain (break/sprain).
  • Minor cuts, bumps or bruises.
  • Referral for blood work, diagnostic imaging, and other tests.
  • Sore throat.
  • Ear infection.
  • Cough, cold, and flu-like symptoms.
When you should go to an emergency room
 
  • Your heart has stopped or you’ve experienced a life-threatening trauma.
  • You are having symptoms of a heart attack or stroke- this includes chest pain of any kind.
  • You aren't conscious or have recently lost consciousness since the injury.
  • You're having a lot trouble breathing.
  • You are bleeding severely. 
  • You are having urgent mental health concerns. 
  • You are showing signs of serious infection.
  • You have experienced a major head injury.
  • You have experienced a deep cut or have a foreign object in your eyes/ears.
 
Other options
  • Call 811 to speak with a registered nurse and get advice on non-urgent medical matters. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 
  • If you do not have a family practice, call 811 or visit www.needafamilypractice.ca to join a provincial wait list. 
  • Your community pharmacist may offer advice on non-urgent medication matters.
